Gulf Coast Lactation Launches Fundraising Effort to Provide Free Breastfeeding Support for Gulf Coast Families

As of May 16, 2025, a major shift in insurance coverage has left many families on the Gulf Coast without affordable access to breastfeeding services. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama ended its partnership with The Lactation Network, impacting more than 80% of Gulf Coast Lactation’s clients. This change has created a critical gap in care, making expert prenatal and postpartum lactation support even harder to access for local families.

In response, Gulf Coast Lactation is stepping up to meet the need. Under the leadership of Scotty Thomson, RN, BSN, IBCLC, the nonprofit is committed to offering free breastfeeding services to families across the Gulf Coast. These services include support before and after birth from International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs), helping ensure babies are feeding well and parents feel confident and supported.

To expand this vital work, the organization has announced plans to open the Gulf Coast Lactation Center in Daphne, Alabama, in August 2025. The center will provide in-person care in a welcoming, supportive environment—at no cost to families.

To make this vision a reality, Gulf Coast Lactation is launching a $25,000 fundraising campaign to open the center and sustain its free services. Community members and businesses are invited to contribute and help ensure that no family has to go without essential breastfeeding support due to cost or insurance barriers.
