Yo-Yo Ma Headlines Mobile Symphony’s Blockbuster 2023-2024 Season

Yo-Yo Ma Headlines Mobile Symphony’s Blockbuster 2023-2024 Season

The Mobile Symphony Orchestra (MSO) has announced a stellar lineup of eight outstanding concerts for its 2023-2024 season, including a Feb. 29, 2024, gala appearance by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, one of the most successful and well-known classical performers of all time! Six-concert season memberships are now on sale. Tickets for the holiday concert and Yo-Yo Ma gala can be added to any membership purchase.

“I am thrilled to announce our exciting new season,” MSO Music Director Scott Speck said. “Of course, the biggest news is the return of Yo-Yo Ma – for his third visit to the MSO! There’s a reason why Yo-Yo Ma is a household name. He is one of the greatest artistic spirits of our generation. Yo-Yo Ma playing the Elgar Cello Concerto with the MSO will be the Gulf Coast’s most important musical event of the season.”

The season opens Sept. 16 and 17, 2023, with Heroes & Villains, scores from Star Wars, King Kong, Wonder Woman, The Incredibles and more showing how music may be the true superpower.

The orchestra’s annual casual concert, Beethoven and Blue Jeans, Nov. 18 and 19, 2023, features young flutist Anthony Trionfo and Beethoven’s charming “Pastoral” Symphony.

On Jan. 20 and 21, 2024, the MSO presents Stravinsky’s magical Firebird Suite, Duke Ellington’s jazz-infused River Suite and pianist Maxim Lando performing Tchaikovsky’s beloved Piano Concerto No. 1.

Vibrant young artist Simone Porter will perform Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, a guaranteed showstopper, on March 9 and 10, 2024.

The University of South Alabama Concert Choir joins the orchestra on April 6 and 7, 2024, for Mozart’s Requiem, a breathtaking choral masterpiece loved the world over.

The season ends May 18 and 19, 2024, with A Latin Rhapsody, featuring Cuban piano phenomenon Aldo Lopez-Gavilán performing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue – plus Bernstein’s West Side Story.

MSO’s annual holiday concert is always a much-anticipated family tradition. This season, Dec. 16 and 17, 2023, the orchestra welcomes guest conductor Robert J. Seebacher, vocalist Kevin Thompson and Mobile’s Singing Children for a concert packed with holiday favorites.

All concerts in the series are performed twice: Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. at Mobile’s historic Saenger Theatre. The gala Yo-Yo Ma concert is one performance only at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024.

Six-concert season memberships are $105-$432. Tickets for the Feb. 29, 2024 gala Yo-Yo Ma concert go on sale Sept. 5, but can be purchased now with a membership. Prices range from $65 to $249.

Tickets to individual performances, including the holiday concert, will go on sale Aug. 1 for $20-$96.

Memberships can be purchased online, by phone at 251-432-2010 or at the symphony box office, 257 Dauphin Street. Yo-Yo Ma tickets must be purchased by phone. Student tickets to regular concerts are $10 (excludes Yo-Yo Ma gala). Through the MSO Big Red Ticket program sponsored by the Alabama Power Foundation, students in grades K-12 can attend any of the season’s six classical Sunday performances free when accompanied by a paying adult (excludes the holiday concert and Yo-Yo Ma). More details can be found online at www.mobilesymphony.org.

All concerts have been made possible by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
